Messi’s wait is over: Argentina wins Copa América title

Superstar Lionel Messi won his first trophy with his national team, and Angel Di Maria’s goal helped Argentina beat hosts Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final.

According to the foreign news agency ‘AFP’, the victory in the final played at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro ended Argentina’s wait to win a big trophy after 28 years and Brazil’s record of being unbeaten at home is two and a half.  It broke more than a thousand days later.

Argentina last won a major title in 1993 when the great Gabriel Batistuta defeated Mexico 1-2 in the Copa Cup final in Ecuador.

“It’s a great title, the fans unconditionally supported the team,” said Argentina coach Lionel Saloni.

This is the first time in six editions of the Copa Cup played in Brazil that Brazil has failed to win a trophy.

From the start of the final match, the two teams played aggressively and attacked each other’s goal posts, but the only goal of the match was scored by Argentina’s De Maria in the 22nd minute of the game.

After winning the title, he said, “We could not win even though we came very close many times. We dreamed a lot for it and worked hard.”

“We must concede defeat despite the hardships and difficulties,” said Brazil coach Tate.
